Sir Seretse Khama International Airport
Botswana’s international air arrivals hub is Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, located nine miles to the north of the capital and dealing with the majority of visitors to the country. International flights are limited to South Africa, Kenya and Zambia, serving routes to Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lusaka. The airport is a hub for Air Botswana, and South African Airways, and its subsidiary SA Express and Kenya Airways are active here. Regular domestic flights include those to Maun, Kasane and Francistown.
Sir Seretse Khama International Airport’s single terminal is low-rise, modern and well-equipped, offering a bureau de change, a bank, restaurant and bar, duty-free shops, car parking, forgotten-luggage office and information desk. Car rental can be arranged with Avis, Budget or Imperial, and onward transportation to Gaborone can be done by taxi or hotel shuttle as there are no public buses serving the complex. Journey time to the city, taking into account heavy traffic, varies between 20 and 45 minutes.
Maun International Airport
The tourism hub of Maun in northern Botswana provides access to the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, several important game reserves and the Makgadikgadi salt pan. Maun Airport, located just three miles from the center of town, offers a few scheduled flights via Air Botswana and SA Express to Gaborone and other domestic destinations, as well as to Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The airport’s most useful function for visitors is its frequent short-hop charter and overview flights to the delta and its small airports, plus a flight to the magnificent Zimbabwean Victoria Falls via Air Namibia. The little terminal is due for an update, and offers few creature comforts or facilities. Onward transportation is by airport shuttle bus or taxi. The single runway operates only between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.
Kasane Airport
Set in the northeast corner of the country on the Chobe River, the town of Kasane is a base for Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls just across the border. The small facility is busy with flights to Gaborone via Air Botswana and air charters around the region. Over 600 miles from Gaborone, it’s a useful destination for those short of time who want to explore the region and visit the falls. The facility lies just four miles from the town and offers shuttle bus service to the falls.
Francistown Airport
Francistown Airport is a sleepy complex with one paved runway and a new terminal building which opened in 2011. Set adjacent to the town, the airport is served by Air Botswana with several weekly flights to Johannesburg and Gaborone. Renovations and additions are in progress, and transportation to town is via hotel shuttle or taxi.
