When you think of America's Southwest, you probably envision sunbaked red rocks, swaths of desert and prickly cacti. What you should be envisioning is a real live oasis in the desert, too. Home to the iconic Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Scottsdale, Arizona is a gorgeous desert town just outside the busy hub of Phoenix where fabulous bites, local breweries and cactus-lined hikes await you.

Hot Temps, Hot Foods

"It's a real scorcher out there," could not ring more true in Scottsdale, where temps exceed 100-degrees Fahrenheit for many days in the summer. When you're hungry though, or you just want to get some cool air, the eateries in this desert destination are packed with delicious options (and a bit more temperate environments). Made to order tableside, you must try the guacamole at The Mission, a spot that blends traditional Mexican fare with modern twists just as well as its margaritas (and, yes, they have avocado margaritas). Want Western? Hit up Cowboy Ciao, which melds classics from the American West with, you guessed it, Italian. Meanwhile, the sushi at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is amazing, and with a critically-acclaimed chef at its helm, the handcrafted cocktails and perfectly cooked steak from Bourbon Steak are what dreams are made of (you'll thank us later).

Hit the Dusty Trails

The locals know best — hit the trails early and often. With Tonto National Forest and the Sonoran Desert on either side, there are tons of trailheads to explore in Scottsdale. While Camelback Mountain is definitely a crowd favorite, you especially can't go wrong with Tom's Thumb. Though known for its tricky switchbacks, it's regularly praised for being well worth the effort. Meanwhile, Pinnacle Peak Park offers scenic views, and those with experience can call ahead (480-312-0990) to inquire about the rock climbing routes available at Pinnacle, too. If a flatter, city-centric hike sounds more your vibe, explore the canals that flow right through town.
