Denver International Airport
Colorado’s largest airport and main gateway to the state is Denver International Airport (DIA). This modern architecturally impressive facility is located 23 miles northeast of the city. Each year more than 52 million passengers fly into DIA on their way to the Rocky Mountains.
It is the main hub of regional carrier Frontier and one of United Airlines and Southwest Airlines main hubs. Around 20 carriers in total have regular service to Denver, most of these are domestic. British Airways, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Aeromexico are the only international carriers with service to Colorado. The main domestic destinations are Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas and San Francisco, while London Heathrow and Cancun, Mexico are the top international routes.
The beautiful terminal at DIA has three concourses linked by tram, each of which has a good selection of eateries, coffee and shops selling travel sundries, gifts and reading material. DIA is very far from downtown Denver, but the Ground Transportation Information Center on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal can arrange shared shuttle vans, mountain shuttles, private taxis and public buses. There are also 12 car rental companies on site because driving is a very common transport choice for arriving travelers. The journey to downtown Denver takes about 45 minutes so keep that in mind before booking a very pricey cab.
Colorado Springs Airport
Colorado’s other major airport is on the outskirts of Colorado Springs. Around 100 flights per day fly in and out of the Springs, offering an option for travelers heading to the southern half of the state. United, American, Continental, Frontier and Allegiant are the main airlines operating out of here. Denver and Dallas are the top destinations, followed by Houston, Chicago and Atlanta.
The terminal is basic but contains a selection of places to eat, shop and reading materials. Wi-Fi internet is free throughout the terminal for travelers with their own laptop or portable device. Ground transportation is limited to communal shuttles, private limousines, taxis and rental cars. There are also special shuttles that run directly to several popular ski resorts within proximity of the airport. Six major car rental firms such as Avis, Budget and Hertz operate at the airport, which is located six miles south of Colorado Springs. Renting a car here is also a popular choice for most travelers arriving at the airport.
