If you're itching for an epic getaway this summer, we have a few reasons why you should head to the Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.
Biking
Whether you’re a regular cyclist or just starting to build up your pedal power, the bike trails in Breck are perfect for family bonding. In fact, the League of American Bicyclists named the town the gold standard for most Bike Friendly Communities in North America. Hit the bike trails at the ski resort or go for a casual ride around town to take in the views and stop to smell the wildflowers. You might also want to plan your visit around Breck Bike Week, June 21 – 25, which promises bike-in movies, guided campfire rides, clinics, costumed parades, and much more.
Summer Dogsledding
It might be run by a company called Snowcap Sled Dogs, but make no mistake, dogsledding tours are offered year-round in Breckenridge. Hop on one of their scooters or carts to practice mushing and steering as the adorable husky-pups takeoff down the trails taking you for a ride. As you get more comfortable with your team, you might have to make a return trip in the winter to experience it in the winter wonderland.
Second Saturdays Art
The second Saturday of each month is dedicated to kids and creativity. The Breckenridge Arts District campus offers hands-on workshops for a variety of projects like popup Mother’s Day cards. Make and take your creations home for a unique souvenir.
SUP on Maggie Pond
Maggie Pond is one of Breck’s hidden gems with views and close by patio at Quandary Grill to embrace the summer sun. The pond transforms into a bustling hub for boards and swimming dogs during the summer. Rent a standup paddleboard (SUP) and work on your balance (or yoga if you really want to challenge yourself) and snag some epic photos with the watery reflection in the background.
Guided Nature Hikes
You could venture out into the wilderness on your own, but by teaming up with a local guide, you’ll be introduced to the history, wildflowers, and wildlife of the region by an expert. BreckTreks offers tours along Peak 8, while the Breckenridge Heritage Society can tell you all about the area’s ghost towns and mining history.
Learn to Fly Fish
Fly-fishing is a favorite pastime in Colorado and reeling in your first big catch is almost a right of passage. For the best chance of snagging a fish, don your waders and head out to the Blue River. The area is teeming with playful trout that make a splashing sound that’s both relaxing and invigorating. Breckenridge Outfitters and Mountain Angler offer daily guided trips and can provide you with insider tips and tricks for bringing home a prize.
Historic Walking Tour
Led by the heritage alliance, Breckenridge’s nationally recognized historic district is just waiting to be explored. Learn about all the buildings that make up the city's blueprint from the tiniest log cabin to the historic residence. You'll be told stories of the gold seekers, hardy souls, and socialites who shaped Breck's past, present, and future and be left to ponder your own impact on the community.
